Yes, if your data center meets the size limits described below then you can use Data Center Energy Estimates to obtain an ENERGY STAR score and certification. Portfolio Manager will assign an estimated energy use value for your Data Center based on its Gross Floor Area (GFA).
Requirements to use Data Center Energy Estimates:
The GFA of your data center and all other non-scorable property types in the building, cannot exceed 25% of the property's GFA. This is related to our requirement that at least 75% of your property GFA (excluding parking) must be property type(s) that are eligible for a score. If your Data Center is using Energy Estimates, then its GFA is not eligible for a score (its not counted as a "scorable property type"). For example, a 100,000 ft2 office building with a 20,000 ft2 library, and a 6,000 ft2 data center (using Energy Estimates) is not eligible to use Data Center Energy Estimates (only 74% is a scorable property type).
- There is a cap on the value of the Data Center Energy Estimate for large data centers. The cap is applied when a data center space is greater than 10% of the property’s GFA. For example, a 100,000 ft2 building with a 20,000 ft2 data center will get a Data Center Energy Estimate that is equivalent to the estimate for a 10,000 ft2 data center (10% of 100,000 ft2). Data Center Energy Estimates are intended for small Data Centers that don’t have separate metering, so the cap prevents larger data centers from getting a disproportionately large credit.

- The estimated energy that Portfolio Manager calculates for the data center is subtracted from the building’s actual energy use, allowing the building to be evaluated without the data center.
- Users are still encouraged to separately meter and track IT Energy in Portfolio Manager, which is the best practice and will result in the most accurate score, especially where the data centers are greater than 10% of the property GFA.
