A currently licensed Professional Engineer or Registered Architect (licensed professional) must verify that all information on the ENERGY STAR application is true and accurate by signing and stamping the application.
EPA believes their licensing requirements help protect the integrity and value of ENERGY STAR certification. Licensed professionals must provide unbiased services and are legally bound to uphold standards of ethics. The licensed professional does not need to be licensed in the same state that the building is located. However, State and territorial licensure laws and regulations vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Before offering or performing services, it is recommended that licensed professionals understand the professional practice and ethics requirements contained in the relevant state and territorial laws and regulations. In 2014, EPA sought public comment on the verification process, and decided to maintain this requirement. Click here to read an overview of the comments and conclusions.
