Does the "M" in Mcf mean "Million" or "Thousand?" Follow

Portfolio Manager uses "M" to represents million (Mcf =Million Cubic Feet) and "k" to represents thousand. However, some utilities use Mcf to represent "thousand cubic feet" and MMcf as "million cubic feet."  Unfortunately, there isn't an industry standard on this term.

We chose our approach (M= million, k=thousand) because:

  • We needed to pick one standard for consistency.  We couldn't have the "M" stand for thousand in Mcf and the "k" stand for thousand in kBtu.
  • The metric system is the international standard:
    c=100 K=1,000 M=1,000,000

Because we know utilities use both conventions to express 1,000 (kcf and Mcf), we always show the written out equivalent when you select units:

Mcf million cubic feet
Mlbs million pounds
kcf thousand cubic feet
klbs thousand pounds
